Maria always wanted to be the voice for those who could not speak. Starting in high school, she taught remedial reading to students in neighboring Compton and Watts, California. While living in southeast Asia, she worked at the Malaria Control Center and volunteered at the air force hospital in Korat, Thailand. Since settling in to South Florida over 30 years ago, she has continued her work in advocacy.

Juvenile Justice

Starting the “Scared Straight” program for kids at risk in Miami/Dade County, she soon discovered that her passion was in supporting and serving children’s needs in South Florida and beyond. While serving as Chair of the Palm Beach County Juvenile Detention Center, she brought in many guests for the kids. One of these guests was local rap star, Tamien Bane, who spoke to those in the detention center about life as a juvenile in state prison and the repercussions of crime. She also reads to many of the elementary schools in her district.

Her extensive advocacy work with children has put her in contact with Nobel Peace laureate and staunch child-advocate Betty Williams. Currently, they are working on the first City of Peace to house refugee children, to be built in southern Italy.
