Wishing You a very Happy Thanksgiving

My Dear Friends,
Thanksgiving is a wonderful time of year. It is the start of the holiday season; a time to gather with friends and family and give thanks for the blessings bestowed upon us.
As Americans, we owe a debt of gratitude to all of those who came before us. Since the first Thanksgiving, Americans have struggled, sacrificed, and fought to ensure that future generations thrive. Thanks to their efforts, our freedoms, such as the right to vote are protected. In particular, I want to thank our veterans and pledge to continue to be their voice in Tallahassee.
This year, I have so much to be thankful for. Because of the support of so many people, I am able to return to the Florida Senate and represent the issues we hold dear. This is an honor and a privilege. To live in the Sunshine State is truly a blessing. God has provided this great land with a natural source of water, deep ports, bio fuels, and the most beautiful beaches in the world. It is incumbent upon us to protect, nourish, and replenish our natural resources.
With so many demands on our time, it is always difficult for families to sit down and share a meal together. This is one holiday on which we as Americans celebrate our coming together as family. I am grateful for this opportunity to spend time with my family and hope you are able to enjoy the same. As always, my office is open to you to help with any concerns.
Wishing you a very happy Thanksgiving,

Thank You for the Opportunity to Serve

My dear friends- I can not thank you enough.

Our victory was won by the people. There is no other explanation against so much money and negative campaigning.

As I’ve said before, this race was not about me or my opponent. This was a contest between two different philosophies. It is due to your support- phone banking, canvassing, telling your friends and neighbors- and especially, your support here with your messages of encouragement, which made the difference in what was a very challenging time.

Now the campaign is behind us and we have a lot to focus on: public education, senior protection and our veterans, ways to promote economic prosperity, and important safety issues – among many others. Stay tuned- the best is yet to come.

I am humbled by this victory and proud to serve as your new State Senator in District 34.

Very Truly Yours,

Maria Sachs

Sworn Testimony Debunking Limo Ads

A Sworn Affidavit Exposing the negative limo ads as 100% false

Two claims have been made by a negative political campaign concerning Maria Sachs’ transportation expenses:

  • That Ms. Sachs billed luxury limousines as a travel expense for her legislative office
  • That in 85 cases Maria Sachs billed travel expenses for services from Wall Street Transportation company that she did not use so that she could personally pocket the money.

Below is an affidavit, a signed legal document, which falsifies both of these claims by the Ellyn Bogdanoff campaign.

Here it is typed below:

Wall Street Transportation company, based in Coral Springs, Fl, hereby affirms that the following are true

1) that this company operates airport car service, with all permits, licenses and and commercial insurance required by each of the three counties  to and from the major South Florida airports.

2) That Maria Sachs used this company for transportation to Fort Lauderdale and the Miami airports in order to catch commercial flights to and from Tallahassee, Fl.

3) That the type of vehicle used was a sedan or available SUV (at no extra cost). At no time did Mrs. Sachs request or use a stretch limousine.

4). That the trip charges were negotiated to the lowest rates that we offer and below the standard rate of other competitors who also maintain the proper permits, licensing and insurance required by each individual county.

5). A negative political campaign has recently accused Maria Sachs of feigning the use of our service for the 85 trips below; she has in fact used our service for those trips.

Debunking the false Limo Ads- Truth in Politics Bill

Currently in Florida- candidates are prohibited from making false statements, but political parties and committees have no such standards.

The fact that you can’t lie in advertising, but you can when running for elected office is shameful and needs to be changed.

***Press Release***

Senator Maria Sachs (D – Delray Beach) The Truth in Politics Bill will ensure that every candidate will attest to the truth of the political advertising made by their campaign or on their behalf by a political party, political committee, or an electioneering communications organization.

Senator Sachs stated, “In order for our democracy to work we must have an informed electorate. Defamatory and false information used in political advertisements suppress the vote and debase our American form of government.”

This Bill amends s. 104.271, Florida Statutes, currently only candidates for office are governed by this provision of the Florida Election Code. This has allowed politicians to obey the law and at the same time their party or an outside group can say anything they want without fear of reprisal.

“Sachs fights for causes that matter”

Printed by the Palm Beach Post- Article

November 3 2012

To the Editor:

This is a first time for me. Never before in the thirty-six years of carrying the label Nobel Peace Prize Laureate have I felt it necessary to write such a letter to the editor of any newspaper.

However, as a woman who stood with  many other thousands of women in Northern Ireland against violence and injustice, I feel compelled to put pen to paper.

It is difficult to watch anyone being pummeled by personal attacks. It hurts even more when the person being attacked is a dear friend of many years.

Senator Maria Sachs is such a friend. I know Maria very well. She has stood shoulder to shoulder with me to build the first “City of Peace” for children.

Maria Sachs has been an advocate for all that is right in the world, such as fighting for the rights of children against the powerful who want to traffic in child slavery; fighting for the rights of the environment against the moneyed interests of oil companies, and fighting for the rights of the women against those in power who want to subjugate them.

I believe the American people are aware of the power of advertising. Money talks, we all know that, but when it is used to buy personal attacks against a fine lady and mislead the public it must be challenged. Do not allow this to happen to one of the best women you have in politics today. I say this as a Nobel Peace Laureate. I […]

Apology Demanded

Press Release: Senator Maria Sachs demands apology from opponent after use of Holocaust in election material.

At a press conference today, Senator Maria Sachs, candidate for State Senate District 34, demanded an apology from her opponent Ellyn Bogdanoff for her decision to exploit the Holocaust as a political tool for votes. In a show of solidarity, Sachs was supported by former Congressman Ron Klein and Congressman Ted Deutch, County Commissioners Burt Aaronson and Shelly Vana, State Representatives Irv Slosberg and Lori Berman, and Tax Collector Anne Gannon.
With a strong voice, they denounced Bogdanoff’s tactic of exploiting the Holocaust and demanded an apology. By sending out mailers and repetitive and obtrusive robo-calls invoking the Holocaust, Ellyn Bogdanoff is trivializing an act of genocide. Trying to scare our seniors and especially our Holocaust survivors is indeed, shameful.
In impassioned remarks, Congressman Ted Deutch said it was particularly offensive because Sachs’ family includes Holocaust survivors and her husband, Peter, was born in a Displaced Person’s Camp in Berlin.
Congressman Deutch:  “Using the Holocaust to try to scare up votes is not politics as usual. It’s disgraceful…The suggestion that Maria Sachs doesn’t think that these programs (the Holocaust Museum and the Survivors Fund) should be respected – is outrageous! This is not about a budget vote. This is about a claim that, of course, Ellyn Bogdanoff knows is outrageous. Of course the Republican Party knows its outrageous. To suggest that someone who is as close to survivors and has been part of the survivor community like Maria Sachs… doesn’t respect the work that the Holocaust Museum or the Survivor Assistance Program does is just beyond the pale. It’s sad. This isn’t just politics as usual. This is what people despise about politics”.

“Sachs over Bogdanoff” – Palm Beach Post Endorsement!

I am proud to announce that The Palm Beach Post has endorsed my candidacy for State Senate in District 34.

The Palm Beach Post

The momentum is swinging in our favor. My opponent’s negative ads have been debunked and there is nothing left to hide the extreme right-wing leadership bankrolling her campaign.

This endorsement compares our voting records and reports that my record reflects the values and principles of our community. The Post endorsement points out that my opponent, Ms. Bogdanoff, supports the “reckless legislation the too-powerful Republican majority has been eager to pass. Electing Sen. Sachs could help deny Republicans the two-thirds supermajority that too often lets them drop any pretense of bipartisanship.”

I have a record of standing up for those issues that best serve the people of Palm Beach and coastal Broward.

My Key Priorities Are:

Reducing the cost of property insurance – not supporting the excesses of
Citizens Insurance

Supporting a strong public education so that we can invest in Florida’s future

Promoting and protecting our veterans and our seniors

Supporting the independence of our judiciary

These last two weeks are critical as early voting begins Saturday, October 27th.

Spread the word to your friends and neighbors in our community. Forward this blog post on to your friends. If you want to help out – please respond  here  and we’ll get in touch.

We need everyone’s support to win this critical race!

Ban on Texting While Driving

Senator Maria Sachs (D – Delray Beach) has filed a bill that will ban Texting while Driving.

3,092 lives were lost in 2010 because of distracted driving. The new bill will make texting and/or emailing while operating a motor vehicle a primary traffic offense.

Currently, Florida is one of only 7 states to have no restrictions at all on texting while driving.

Similar bills have been introduced each of the previous 3 legislative sessions and failed. Ellyn Bogdanoff, (Republican) is the reason we do not yet have any legislation against texting while driving. Bogdanoff killed the bill in 2010 and 2012, as she doesn’t believe texting while driving is dangerous, telling a reporter “we are a multitasking society now”. (Article)

Senator Sachs strongly disagrees, as well as 70% of all Floridians, who believe some form of legislation is necessary to keep our streets safe.

Sending or receiving a text takes a driver’s eyes from the road for an average of 4.6 seconds, the equivalent-at 55 mph-of driving the length of an entire football field, blind. 11% of all drivers under the age of 20 involved in fatal crashes were reported as distracted at the time of the crash. This age group has the largest proportion of drivers who were distracted.

This legislation will save lives, reduce injuries, and protect property on Florida’s roadways. “Finally we will put common sense to traffic and safety”, said Senator Sachs.

A Clear Distinction – Debuting our New TV Ad

You may have seen those false, negative ads pummeling voters from left and right. Those “limo” ads are completely false!

The Republican Party is attacking me with lies and misinformation hoping you’ll ignore my opponent’s extreme, right-wing voting record.

While my opponent is engaged in negative, disingenuous ad tactics, I’m focused on the issues that affect all of us:

Property Insurance

Let’s focus on helping our struggling families- and reduce property insurance rates. Unlike my opponent, I am not a former insurance agent who votes for the insurance industry!

Public Education

Unlike my opponent, I believe  supporting a stronger public education is the key to a better economy in Florida. Investing in our universities will bring business and investment in Florida – not by outsourcing our jobs and our students to out-of-state corporations.

Veterans Support

My father earned two purple hearts as a Veteran of World War II. I am fiercely proud of our Veterans and have passed six bills to promote and protect them here in Florida.

Endorsed by the Miami Herald!

Maria Sachs Endorsed by the Miami Herald

“Sachs Better Choice” – Endorsed by the Miami Herald

I am very proud to announce that one of the premier newspapers in Florida has endorsed my candidacy.

The Miami Herald, which represents the largest urban area in the state, has reviewed the records of both myself and my opponent and found that they “believe she would be a better fit for this district”.

This is particularly important because the Miami Herald looks at state issues rather than local interest groups. As cited in the endorsement, because my opponent has not represented the interests of her constituents, the focus of her campaigning and her negative advertising has been twisted and based on falsehood rather than on her record, or lack thereof.

Thank you for your support. Together with all our combined efforts we will ensure this election is not bought by special interests.
