Senator Sachs welcomed several members of the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County to the Capitol. The group traveled to Tallahassee to talk to Senator Sachs about continuing their mission to build a strong, caring Jewish community at home and abroad.

The organization relies on private donors to help finance their efforts to feed the hungry, care for the elderly including many Holocaust survivors, and provide disaster emergency support to the community.  They also focus on education efforts to engage Jewish youth in the area.

Senator Sachs commends the Federation, “For many years, the Jewish Federation’s philanthropic efforts have helped many people of all faiths in the South Florida. It is with a great sense of pride that I welcome members of the Federation from my district to the Capitol.”

Senator Sachs met with delegates from Palm Beach County League of Cities, an organization of local elected officials. Boca Raton Mayor Susan Haynie & City Councilwoman Constance Scott were among the delegates who traveled to Tallahassee last week to discuss their priorities and concerns for the legislative session. The League is advocating to safeguard city authority by preserving home rule power concerning vacation rentals and pushing for sober home reform. Senator Sachs expressed her support stating, “The League of Cities represents a partnership of many municipalities in Palm Beach.  The have played a vital role in creating a good bill concerning sober home reform.

This legislation will benefit the people of Palm Beach and those seeking treatment for addiction.” Senator Sachs believes working with dedicated local officials is essential to the legislative process and continuing to make Palm Beach County a great place to live.

Senator Sachs met with students from Palm Beach State College to discuss a proposed bill that would provide instate tuition rates for the dependent children of immigrants. Under this bill, dependent children would not be denied resident classification for tuition purposes, provided they meet certain requirements. Senator Sachs recognizes the importance of education and the doors it can unlock for students. Eligible students should not be barred from affordable education opportunities based on the immigration status of their parents.

Any students who are making the trip to Tallahassee, please contact our office so we can arrange a tour of the Senate chambers.

Senator Sachs always has and continues to support senior arcades and family amusement centers. A year ago, lawmakers hurriedly passed a law shutting down internet cafes in response to a multi-state investigation into Allied Veterans of the World, a bogus charity accused of running an illegal gambling ring throughout the state. The law also shut down adult arcades frequented by seniors across the State.

During a hearing on a bill proposal dealing with family amusement centers Senator Sachs asked whether the proposed law would apply to senior arcades, many of which shut down after the internet cafe ban was passed last year. “How about those kids that are 80, 85, and 90?” she asked. Senator Sachs has been steadfast in her attempts to shed light on the difference between the senior arcades and the internet cafes fraudulently posing as charities. As Vice Chair of the Gaming Committee, Senator Sachs intends to file an amendment to ensure the future of this important recreational outlet for the people of District 34.

The Florida Senate honored the brave men and women who serve during Military Day at the Capitol. On the same day, the Senate unanimously passed the Florida GI Bill which aims to establish Florida as the top “Welcome Home” state for the military, veterans and their families. The bill expands education and employment opportunities for service members and their families. Over 1.5 million veterans and their families help make Florida the great state it is today. To show our gratitude for their unwavering commitment and sacrifice, the Legislature is devoted to making Florida the most-military friendly state in the nation.

The Florida GI Bill provides funding for a program to expand education options for National Guard members to include industry certification and continuing education to maintain license certification. Additionally, the bill creates the Veteran Tuition Waiver Program which directs state universities, colleges, career centers, and technical centers to waive out-of-state tuition fees for honorably discharged veterans.

The bill also expands a measure sponsored by Senator Sachs in a previous year which creates an employment preference for positions in state, local and regional governmental entities, including the public education system, to all veterans, current members of the Reserves and the Florida National Guard, and the parents and spouses of service members who died in combat. Further, the bill contains language filed by Senator Sachs this year which waives the initial licensing fees for 60 months for licenses obtained through the Department of Business and Professional Regulation and the Department of Health for honorably discharged veterans and their spouses.
