Labor Day was created by the labor movement in America and honors the social and economic achievements of American workers. Our nation’s strength and prosperity depends on the strength of American worker. A decent wage, a secure retirement, safe working conditions, and affordable healthcare are all fruits of the efforts of organized labor. We should honor the ingenuity of American workers.

My husband, Peter, and I wish everyone a fun, safe and Happy Labor Day weekend from our new place in Delray Beach.

I strongly believe our schools should be a safe haven for children – a place free from violence and fear where students enjoy learning and develop social skills.

I joined Mary Wong, President of the Office Depot Foundation in launching their anti-bullying campaign.

With the initial investment of $1 million dollars, the campaign will reach over 300 middle schools this year. Brooks Gibbs, a nationally-known youth crisis counselor, is working with Office Depot Foundation and singing group, One Direction, to launch the nationwide campaign “Be the Difference. Speak Up Against Bullying!”

I look forward to working with Brooks Gibbs and the Office Depot Foundation to put a stop to bullying in our schools!

Another school year has begun, and with it new opportunities and challenges for Florida’s education system. As a member of the Education Policy and Education Appropriations Committees, I face the challenge to voice the needs of our parents, teachers, and especially our children in Tallahassee. Committee meetings start in only three weeks. I am already meeting with community leaders and constituents to formulate policy to bring necessary reform to our system.

Senator Sachs speaks with instructors and students about the medical assistant program at Everest University in Pompano Beach in the above photo.

In Florida’s new economy, job creation and advancements in technology are demanding a more technically trained workforce. Colleges like Everest University are serving these needs and are training the career minded to meet these market demands. In a visit to the University’s Pompano Beach campus I saw firsthand its specialized training courses. Its community outreach is particularly impressive. They offer a free GED program open for anyone in the community who needs to complete their high school requirements.

After more than seven hours of technical testimony from engineers, scientists, and activists, the hundreds of people in attendance and the Senators on the Select Committee knew that the problem of pollution in our water is complex.

But the moment that the young kids from the community came forward and spoke with simplicity, the room fell silent as we all reflected on their words. These are the “River Kids” who grew up fishing, swimming, and kayaking in the pristine waters of the Indian River Lagoon. Now with the pollution as toxic as it is, they can’t even touch their water playground.

The entire ecosystem is suffering. Birds, dolphins and manatees are dying in extraordinary numbers because of toxic algae blooms and bacteria in the water. The Health Department posted signs warning people not to fish, drink or swim in the water. The stench of released overflow water pouring into these estuaries is so strong that business owners say tourists aren’t coming close to area beaches for their usual summer activities.
The pollution starts with water streaming off paved surfaces and agricultural fields laden with pesticides and fertilizers, septic tank effluent, petroleum products and animal wastes. Originating near Orlando, it flows south into Lake Okeechobee. Because of our unusually heavy rainy season, high water levels threaten to breach the 75-year-old Herbert Hoover Dike.

In order to keep the lake from breaching and flooding the surrounding cities, the Army Corps of Engineers releases millions of gallons of polluted lake water out into the Caloosahatchee and St. Lucie rivers.

As the state senator from Palm Beach and Broward counties, I […]

50 Years ago, a historic turn in American history occurred. The Civil Rights Movement of the 1960’s was a turning point in a democratic rising of Americans of all races to guarantee equal rights under the law. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s words are an inspiration to us today as we continue to fight for human rights for all people. If there is discrimination against one group, we all suffer – as Americans we believe in equality for all people.

August 7, 2013 is Florida’s second annual Purple Heart Day.

Legislation I sponsored last year sets August 7th as Annual Day of Honor for Florida’s Purple Heart Recipients. This means that Florida, a state with a large population of Veterans, has finally joined other states around the nation in recognizing and honoring  those who have sacrificed so much for our nation’s ideals.

In honor of my father, who was awarded two Purple Hearts in his lifetime of service, I sponsor legislation every year on behalf of our Florida Veterans. Please contact my office for ideas for next year’s session.

The State has an obligation under the Florida Constitution to provide a proper and safe education to all children. I am proud of Broward and Palm Beach Counties’ continuing growth. As your Senator, I work hard to find opportunities to improve, and I do this through meeting constituents, local organizations and schools.

Last week, I met with Family Promise of South Palm Beach County, a volunteer run organization that serves the homeless by providing meals, hospitality, job and housing searches, financial planning assistance, resume writing, and parenting needs.  Family Promise transports guests from host congregations in the area to the Day Center, where guests have access to phone services, a computer, and a mailing address to assist with the housing and employment searches. Our community is so fortunate to have such devoted volunteers and community leaders dedicating their lives to work with the most vulnerable populations. Homelessness is a complex problem, and supporting those who wish to work and provide for themselves and their families is a solution that benefits all of us.

I had the opportunity to join the Delray Beach Village Academy Forum on Education last Wednesday, where I spoke about the importance of K-12 education and areas for future growth. Not too long ago, Village Academy expanded its middle and high school programs, and has continued to impact the Delray Beach community in immeasurable ways by working with at-risk youth. I presented three students with awards for their excellent essays discussing their educational experiences […]

Speaking as a mother of three, I implored the group to take action and petition both the Florida Senate President and Speaker of the Florida House on this law that has become a lightning rod for national attention.  I also discussed the importance of maintaining State Voting Rights in light of the recent Supreme Court decision and vowed to continue to serve as an advocate for the disenfranchised.

This past Friday I spoke on ABC News about my fight to put Florida’s parasailing industry under better regulations.

The tragedy that occurred in Panama City with the two young tourists last week sent shock waves throughout the country as the video of the accident went viral.

Most people who go parasailing in Florida, both tourists and Floridians, don’t realize that too many commercial parasail operators are underinsured and under regulated.

If you want to do business in the state of Florida, then you need to comply with the most stringent requirements for safety because we are a destination resort.

We want to make sure that everybody understands that if they want to enjoy our beautiful beaches and the parasailing opportunities, they need to operate safely, that they are regulated by the state and that they have full insurance requirements.

I intend to refile the bill next session and am already gaining bi-partisan support for its passage.

The tragedy is that it’s taken another accident to prove that we need safety regulations in place.
