Senator Sachs was recognized by President Armstrong of Broward College and the Board of Trustees for her commitment to their institution of higher learning.  Senator Sachs believes the only true pathway to prosperity is through education.  Over the past several years, our colleges and universities have been caught in a budget vise that has squeezed students and programs at every level.  As a member of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Education, she has made it a priority to fight to bring home dollars for our local colleges. That fight has yielded successful results.  Broward College, FAU and Palm Beach State College all saw significant increases in state appropriations. Broward College received a 15 percent increase over last year’s base funding. This moves the Broward College appropriations from $71.1 million last year to this year’s $81.5 million.

Broward College is excelling, growing a nationwide reputation. In addition to offering four year degrees, the Aspen Institute named Broward College as one of the 2012 top ten community colleges in the US. A 15% increase in appropriations will enable the only public college in Broward County to continue to provide quality training and higher education to our community. These appropriations for Broward College impact a total of 67,000 students’ educational experience. These students are family members, friends, neighbors, and colleagues. They are patrons of our local businesses and residents in our communities. Some of these students will progress in careers as nurses and doctors, researchers for medical advancement, entrepreneurs and public servants. The investment in our local colleges is a direct part of 67,000 students’ lives, and in turn each of our lives.

While this victory is certainly one that will see immediate and long term benefits for our community, we must continue to work together to promote continued investment and funding of Florida’s education system. If we support our local schools in providing quality training, our State and District will see a return on our community’s investment in the form of economic development. Senator Sachs is committed to ensuring that all of our public schools, from primary to post-secondary, have the resources to make our children competitive and successful in their chosen careers.
