As the daughter of a WWII veteran, I saw throughout my life how much veterans sacrifice for us, not only through the course of their service, but throughout their lives. It is our responsibility to honor them when they return with the same devotion. For this reason, I fought hard during this year’s Legislative Session in Tallahassee and successfully passed Senate Bill 370, protecting the dignity of our most courageous citizens. Last week the Governor signed the bill and the law will go into effect July 1, 2013.

This bill guarantees that any veteran whose body lies unclaimed in a funeral home will receive a proper military burial. Furthermore, no unclaimed veteran’s body may be sold or used for medical research without proper consent. Every veteran is entitled to a dignified military burial.  Additionally, the bill bans funeral homes from selling any human body parts without the proper consent from the loved ones of the deceased.

I am grateful for the valued services of veterans, and I introduce and pass a bill every year to safeguard those who protect us. As your Senator and a member of the Military and Veteran Affairs Committee, I can guarantee that I will continue to fight for the rights of our veterans both in my professional and personal life.
